Lener String Quartet

Description:

The early Beethoven recordings of the Renner String Quartet are now available on CD after 100 years! The Lenner String Quartet was formed in 1918 by members of the Hungarian State Opera (where Mahler once served as music director), including Hubaye on violin and viola and Popper on cello. After a successful debut in London at the Wigmore Hall in 1922, the quartet was recruited by British Columbia to record Beethoven's complete string quartets for the first time in history, bringing the world the wonderful world of Beethoven's music through recordings. Here we reissue the pioneering 1924 recordings of Nos. 14 and 15. Although these recordings are memorable, they were acoustic recordings (so-called trumpet recordings), and were often forgotten when they were later re-recorded using an electric recording system with microphones. The Renner Quartet was considered a rival to the Budapest String Quartet, which was one year its senior and consisted of similar members. The four players are equal in expression, and the Budapest SQ tended to show a rigorous approach, while the Renner SQ tended to be romantic and dramatic, with the first violin in the lead, as evidenced in this recording. The commentary by Tully Potter, a regular contributor to Biddulph's commentaries, discusses the influence of Renner's Beethoven recordings on Aldous Huxley and Virginia Woolf. The book is also an interesting read on the reception of Beethoven's late string quartets. Naxos Japan
