This album features piano concertos by Castro and Ponce, two composers who contributed to the development of classical music in Mexico at the end of the 19th century. Castro studied piano, harmony, and composition at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City, and in May 1883, his work was sent to the centennial celebration of Simon Bolivar's birth in Venezuela, where he received high acclaim and became a pianist. In 1900, he was appointed professor of composition at the Conservatory of Music, where he also taught younger students. His Piano Concerto, the first by a Mexican composer, is a fascinating work with a brilliant piano part and a magnificent orchestra to support it. Ponce was one of the leading composers of Castro's next generation; as a teenager he served as organist at the Church of San Diego, then studied in Italy and Germany before returning to Mexico to succeed Castro as professor of piano at the Mexican National Conservatory of Music. In later years, he was known for his exchange with Andrés Segovia, for whom he wrote many guitar pieces.
