Philippe Bouzmans' last opera is a nonsense comedy! The singers are also splendid! The opera "Julie" (based on Strindberg's play "Duchesse Julie") was performed at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in 2005 under the baton of Kazushi Ohno, and became a big hit. The opera composer Philippe Bouwmans, who had been attracting worldwide attention since then, sadly passed away in April 2022. His last work was "Laxatives for my child", which is recorded for the first time in this concert. Two months before his death, he recorded this opera for the first time. Two months before his death, he anticipated that this would be his last opera, and said, "I no longer wanted to write tragedies or serious operas; I wanted to end with a pure comedy. The story, based on Georges Fedeau's original story, is as nonsensical as it sounds. Bastien Foravoine, a potter, is trying to get an exclusive contract with the French army through the intermediary of Aristide Chouillou, by blowing that he can make a "toilet bowl that will never break. Foravoine's child, 7-year-old Toto, "Bébé" (French for "baby"), is constipated but does not want to take laxatives, and his wife-mother, Julie, presses him to do something about it.In the meantime, the intermediary Mr. Shui-yu arrives, and when I tell him that his son is constipated, he happens to confess that Mr. Shui-yu is also suffering from digestive problems, and that his bowels become loose in the opposite direction. In the midst of his slapstick behavior, he accidentally puts Toto's laxative in his mouth... The name of the female lead character, Julie, is also a reference to his own hit movie. In the end, Benoit Mernier, who also has strong ties to the Théâtre de la Monnaie, was in charge of completing the work. Jean-Sébastien Boux and Jodie Devos, two of the leading singers in the world of French opera, will provide excellent acting and singing. The fact that this is a co-production with the Opéra de Lyon, which, like the Théâtre de la Monnaie, focuses on contemporary opera, also shows the high expectations for this production. Naxos Japan
