Charpentier, Marc-Antoine (1643-1704)

Description:

The latest recording of Valentin Tournet, one of the most sought-after young conductors of the 2020s in France, a country with a long history of achievements in the performance of ancient instruments, is a collection of large-scale vocal works by Charpentier, including the famous "Te Deum". In the 17th century, under the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King, Charpentier was commissioned by various institutions in Paris to compose music and left behind a vast amount of masterpieces, despite the fact that Lully, the royal music director, prevented him from obtaining royal commissions in the early years of his career. The most notable of his compositions, which were reevaluated in the 20th century, were his vocal works for churches with ensembles of various sizes, especially the preludes for trumpet. The "Te Deum," with its trumpet prelude, is one of Charpentier's masterpieces, and is often used in European broadcast programs such as the Vienna Philharmonic's "New Year's Concert. He also finely crafts the aspects of the piece that are most effective for chamber music ensembles, allowing the audience to enjoy the composer's unique flexibility in sound creation. The orchestra, which supports the acoustic beauty of the 17-member chorus and five soloists, is solidly composed of 14 string players and numerous wind instruments. The orchestra is supported by 17 chorus members and 5 soloists, and is made up of 14 string players and numerous wind instruments. The performance is a great showcase of the charms of multilayered ancient instrumental music. The detailed commentary (in French, English, and German) by Catherine Cessac, known for her longtime research on Charpentier, is also worthwhile reading. Naxos Japan
