Description:
Francesco Cella finally releases all two volumes of "The Mean Law" at once! Italian harpsichordist, organist, and conductor Francesco Cella has finally recorded Bach's "The Mean Rhythm", a masterpiece in which he has devoted his years of experience to tuning his own works. Born in Bologna in 1967, Francesco Cella studied with Ferdinando Tagliavini and Gustav Leonhardt. He has performed and recorded vocal and instrumental music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, both as a soloist and conducting his own ensemble. Now, Chela has finally recorded Bach's "The Mean Law. Over the years, Cella has been interested in the fundamental character of the "Mean Rule" from two points of view: "discipline" and "interiority. Discipline" refers to the rigor represented by counterpoint, and the training of the head and fingers necessary to realize it as sound. The "interiority" is the character of the ideas and structures that sometimes lead to reflection and contemplation. I went into the recording as ready to express these in performance. The emphasis was then placed on tuning.Regarding the original title of the collection, "Das wohltemperierte Klavier" (The Well-Tuned Klavier), Cella understands that it is left to the "good taste" of the performer according to the piece, not to any particular tuning principle. In other cases, the correct tuning may be one that sounds pleasant, while another may be one that sounds harsh. He also interprets each piece based on his understanding that Bach's music was a confluence of German, Italian, and French music, and he has tuned the pieces uniquely. The details are not disclosed, but he says, "I leave it to the listener to make his or her own judgment. I may not fully agree, but I hope you will find the ingenuity and ingenuity of my journey through all the keys intriguing. For the second volume, he refers to the Altonicol edition of the score and also to variants that have been cut from later manuscripts. The instrument used for the recording is a replica of the Henri Emusch by Daniele Maria Ziani, whom Chela trusts. The instrument is modeled after a 1736 instrument in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, but since this instrument was restored in later years, it is an "imaginary reproduction instrument" with parts of his own creation added after referring to many Emsch instruments of the same period and also studying instruments and decorative styles of the Louis XV period. After considering the choice of clavichord and fortepiano, Chela chose these instruments for this recording, believing that the diverse character and sound that Bach put into this collection would be clearer if played on a single instrument.
