Composer Tarivaldis Keninsh was born in Latvia in 1919. He studied in Paris under Messiaen and Tony Aubin. After winning several prizes as a composer, he immigrated to Canada in 1951, where he devoted himself to the development of music in this country as an educator. This album, the final volume in his symphony series, contains three of Keninsh's eight numbered symphonies." Symphony No. 2, a "triple concerto," is a majestic work whose second movement features a melody based on a lullaby of the Mi'kmaq people (an indigenous people living in eastern North America). The Third Symphony, completed a few years later, is regarded as a step forward in Keninsh's career as a symphonic composer. Symphony No. 7, which ends with an aria based on his father's text, seems to reflect the composer's emotional trauma over the Soviet occupation of his native Latvia at the time. Naxos Japan
