Description:
Swedish composer and conductor Ludvig Nurman studied at the Leipzig Conservatory in his teens and early twenties, where he studied with Ignaz Moscheles and others and was greatly influenced by Robert Schumann. He later returned to Stockholm, where he taught at the Royal Conservatory of Stockholm and also worked as a conductor. As a composer, he wrote four symphonies, orchestral works, cantatas, and songs in a wide range of genres, earning him the nickname "the Swedish Brahms. His Symphony No. 3 on this album was described by the later composer Wilhelm Stenhammar as "a work full of beauty. It is so beautiful that later composer Wilhelm Stenhammar said, "It is more important to me than any of Brahms's symphonies. The other three overtures include the "Concert Overture in E-flat Major," composed in 1856, in the traditional form of a slow introduction followed by a sonata-style allegro. The "Funeral March" was written in memory of August Söderman, a colleague at the Royal Swedish Opera House, and is a heartfelt expression of grief for his friend who died at the young age of 43.Performed by the Oulu Symphony Orchestra conducted by Johannes Gustafsson.
