Description:
Volume 12 of the complete recording series—featuring dazzling performances by brass and percussion and that enigmatic masterpiece at its finest—is now available Giovanni Antonini’s HAYDN2032 Project aims to record all of Haydn’s symphonies—of which more than 100 still exist—in anticipation of the 300th anniversary of the composer’s birth in 2032. This volume features three symphonies from 1775–76—a period when Haydn, having gained ample compositional experience with the Esterházy family, increasingly had the opportunity to write symphonies for a particularly rich instrumental ensemble—along with the “Toy Symphony.” Although it was determined in the 20th century that the “Toy Symphony” was not composed by Joseph Haydn, and despite numerous alternative theories—such as attributing it to Leopold Mozart or Edmund Angeler—the composer remains unconfirmed to this day. there is no doubt that it is an authentic 18th-century work, with a score dating back to at least the 1760s; it is a groundbreaking experience to hear this rarely performed recording on period instruments, masterfully conducted by the brilliant Antonini. Among Haydn’s three symphonies, No. 69—one of the better-known works—is named after General Loudon, a veteran commander who continued to achieve military successes well into his later years. Trumpets and timpani add a touch of splendor to the sound. Although No. 66 features a relatively small ensemble, its rich sound reveals the full depth of Haydn’s artistry. The Basel Chamber Orchestra, bolstered by talented period instrument players such as the virtuoso Emiliano Rodolfi (oboe)—who also performs with Il Giardino Armonico and Zephyr—and the highly sought-after Carles Cristóbal (bassoon), demonstrates impressive agility, Together with the customary liner notes by musicologist Christian Moritz Bauer—based on the latest research (in English, French, and German; with a Japanese translation included in the Japanese edition)—they fully convey the depth of Haydn’s works.
