Description:

Master Leonhardt's early recordings are now available on CD! The keyboardist Gustav Leonhardt (1928-2012), whose skillful young talent contributed greatly to the history of ancient instrumental music, made recordings from early on and left behind a vast amount of material throughout his half-century of recording history. Many of his early recordings have been released on CD on labels such as DHM, Teldec/Warner, and Vanguard Classics. However, this 1962 organ recording, reissued on the Paradizo label by harpsichordist Skip Sempé, one of his closest brothers, has not been included in any previous reissue project, and this is the first time it has been released on CD. Of the 11 pieces on this CD, approximately 8 are from a repertoire that has never been re-recorded.The program is a selection of English keyboard music from the Renaissance and early Baroque periods, with a focus on works from the important 17th century manuscript "Fitzwilliam's Virginal Book" (some of the music is from the "Musica Britannica," a contemporary score that was being compiled at the time). This is one of the records produced by Cambridge Records in Boston, thanks to the efforts of Boston's antique musicians, who were sensitive to European antique instrumental music from early on, and the performance uses the precious Schnittger organ that remains at St. Michael's Church in Zwolle, Leonhardt's native Netherlands. Unfortunately, the master tape has been lost. Unfortunately, the master tape has been lost, and this is a reissue from an LP record in good condition, but the sound quality does not seem to suffer from this disadvantage. The sound quality does not suffer from this disadvantage at all. The young Leonhardt's masterful performance, in which he brings out the charm of each piece in a very natural manner, is recorded in engineering that conveys the atmosphere of the church interior very well. Sempé's lengthy liner notes (in English and French) on the revival of old music at the time and his memories of his teacher are also of great interest and value. Naxos Japan
