Description:

American composer John Cage shook the meaning of music and performance to its very core with his work "4 minutes and 33 seconds," in which the performer makes no sound at all. His experimental music and ideas have influenced many artists beyond the genre of music. The combination of Cage's aversion to harmony and "choral music" may come as a surprise to many. Cage was 67 years old when he first worked on a choral piece, a "variation" on an existing piece (William Billings' Hymn), transforming it in his own style. To keep the feel of early American music, but to remove the sense of harmony that Cage avoided... After various trials and errors, "Hymns and Variations" for 12 voices was born. The only other choral work Cage has written is "Four2," which he wrote for a high school choir in 1990. Cage called the coincidental sound produced by the overlapping of the independent sounds of each part "Anarchic Harmony," a natural harmony unrestrained by theory or rules. The other two pieces, "Five" and "Four6," were not written for chorus, but there is no specification of instruments to be used for performance. The five parts of "Five" are designated only for specific registers (mainly upper register), and any voice or instrument that can play those registers can be used to play them. The "Four6" has an even greater degree of freedom in performance, as there is no specification of the means of playing the four parts, and the player can choose any note from a score with a small number of notes, times, and numbers. Therefore, depending on the performance, the sound and duration of the piece can be completely different. There are no designated lyrics for any of the pieces, which suggests that Cage regarded the voice as one of his "instruments. The Latvian Radio Chorus, conducted by Sigvars Krava, who has received high acclaim during his visits to Japan, gives a superb performance. Naxos Japan
