Description:

The viola da gamba is a bowed string instrument that produces a beautiful, nasal sound that is subtly different from violas and cellos of the violin genus, due to the difference in fingerboard and body structure. The theme of this album is "Music of the Universe," in which the overtone-rich sound of the viola da gamba is played in a duo with a historical organ installed in a church hall with a short reverberation that is neither too muffled nor too resonant. The album takes its title from the famous Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), a scholar with a vast knowledge of astronomy, and features a carefully selected selection of works that show the best of the string art that flourished in the German-speaking world in the 17th century when Kircher lived, along with masterpieces of solo organ music, on a gamba and organ that remain almost exactly as they were in their original form. The program will be performed on the gamba and organ, both of which have remained almost unchanged from their original state. At that time, the violin was already becoming the mainstay of new instrumental music in German-speaking countries, and many violin pieces by famous performers and composers such as Schmelzer, Albertini, and Biber have been selected for this disc. The music here is replaced with the sound of the gamba, and even those who know the original work can enjoy the performance with a fresh sensation. The gamba player Tepelmann, a Munich native who studied in London and Cologne, two world-renowned centers of ancient instrumental performance, uses an original instrument with a good sound made by Kekl, a 17th century master craftsman who moved to Vienna from Füssen, the home of stringed instruments. The organ on the other hand is an Austrian one-stage keyboard instrument that has remained virtually untouched since its construction in 1662. The beautiful sound, which is not blurred by reverberation, creates a good harmony and contrast with the taste of the gambas. Naxos Japan
