Description:

Rare sound sources are also restored! Arcana recordings by Enrico Gatti, one of Italy's foremost authorities on ancient Italian instruments. Baroque violinist Enrico Gatti has made known the charm of the rich musical heritage that flourished in Italy in days gone by. Many of his recordings have been made on the Arcana label, now based in Milan, which has carefully selected masterpieces from the history of music as well as lesser-known but important works and composers, and carefully read them in the context of their time. This 13-CD box set brings together the best of Arcana's recordings of works by the great Italian Baroque composers of the 17th and 18th centuries, all of which have been highly acclaimed in various parts of the world since their release. In addition to Corelli's sonatas, which have been receiving renewed acclaim with each new release, and the Veracini and Tartini recordings, which have been out of press until recently, the box also generously features relatively recent recordings, including an album that explores the achievements of the Neapolitan masters and an anthology of string quartets exploring counterpoint. The collection also includes valuable recordings of non-Italian composers, such as Bach's popular complete "Musical Tributes" and Mozart's sonatas, which have been out of print for more than 15 years. The title of this boxed set is a reminder that during the Baroque period, when the human voice was considered the highest form of music, the violin was one of the instruments that could most closely express this belief. The booklet is filled with archival photos, including shots of Banchini, Leonhardt, and Antonello in Japan. Naxos Japan
