Josquin Des Prez (1450/55-1521)

Description:

The elite of Italy, Josquin's birthplace, gathers! Josquin Desprez, one of the most important members of the French-Flemish school of music that swept Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries, was active for a long time in Italy at the time when Leonardo da Vinci and other great Renaissance painters were active. His fame during his lifetime was preserved long after his death through the publishers of sheet music, and he had a great influence on the development of Italian music in later generations. In 2021, the year that marks the 500th anniversary of the death of this great composer, known in Italian as "Joschino" and one of the most important composers in the history of Italian music, four ensembles specializing in pre-Renaissance music in Italy will gather here. Through the Milan-based Arcana label, the four ensembles have produced an album that traces Josquin's career in Italy, a fitting tribute to the anniversary year. Under the direction of Paolo da Col, known for his interpretations of 16th- and 17th-century polyphonic works from Palestrina to Monteverdi, the polyphonic music, carefully selected by examining the connections with the Sforza family of Milan, the Este family of Ferrara, and the papal court, is performed a capella with a solid male voice. Not only does it resonate with taste and depth, but it also has a profound sound, sometimes accompanied by instrumental music. The overlapping of rubbing and plucked strings by the three La Reverdy players, who have extensive experience in medieval music, is exquisite, and Arcana's unique engineering shines through, accurately capturing each player's use of sound as well as the echoes of the space. The commentary based on the latest research is also well worth reading. This album is dedicated to the memory of Liuwe Tamminha, a legendary organist from the Netherlands who played in Italy and passed away suddenly on April 29, 2021. Naxos Japan
