In 1993, he won the first prize at the Vienna International Beethoven Piano Competition. British pianist Leon McCauley, who won the second prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition in the same year, has been working on a collection of Haydn's piano sonatas. This album, his third collection, features six sonatas composed between 1767 and 1784. In this album, too, Macquarie plays with a playful spirit, freely adding ornaments to the melodies. The two later sonatas, Nos. 55 and 56, are especially worth listening to for their rich performances. Naxos Japan
