Ricercar has a 40-year history in Belgium, a country of ancient music, and is led by Jérôme Lejeune, a musicologist who is well versed in the Baroque and Renaissance music before Bach. This latest release is a fascinating introduction to the bombarde and the dulcian, two important double reed wind instruments used from the Renaissance to the early Baroque period. The bombardo is a type of shawm that can be considered an ancestor of the oboe, but like the viola da gamba and recorder, it is available in a variety of sizes and can be played in ensemble. The bassoon's predecessor, the dulcian, also had its own family of instruments, including treble and middle tones. In this new recording, the two instruments are sometimes played in tandem, and at other times they are played opposite each other in the same piece, creating a very interesting sound that makes the whole album a pleasure to listen to.The contrast between the solo singing of two gifted old-time singers and the unexpected acoustic world of a collection of specialized knowledge.
