Description:

J.F.X. Starker, born in 1750, the same year as Salieri, lived in the same period as Mozart and Haydn, and was one of the most popular composers of his time, whose fame, if once forgotten in the 19th century, could be compared to theirs. (His name appears so frequently in 18th-century documents that it was unusual for there to have been no disc of his symphonies until their recent appearance on the DHM recordings.) The area of activity is mainly the western part of what is now Germany. Born in Würzburg, famous for its rococo palaces, he was court keyboardist to the Archbishop of Mainz, and his works were very popular at the Paris Conserre Spirituale. He also studied in Italy and was a favorite at the court of Naples, but the Archbishop of Mainz regrettably recalled him and defended this popular composer for a long time. The two instrumentalists, who studied in Basel, a center of antique music education, play here a series of masterful duet sonatas that greatly appealed to the fortepiano in the 1780s and 1790s, when it was in its early stages of popularization. Although this is an 18th century-style duet with the violin part as a keyboard accompaniment, the equal dialogue between the two and the thrilling exchange of musical ideas are so thrilling that it even foreshadows Beethoven's duet sonatas. The Fantasy for Fortepiano Solo is also well done, and is a discovery not to be missed, offering a taste of the wonderful music of the late classical period with an eye toward the early Romantic period.
