After a well-received second tour of Japan in 2018, Montreal-based group TOPS completes their fourth album "I Feel Alive", their first since 2017's "Sugar At The Gate"! This is the fourth album from TOPS, a Montreal soft-pop band with a retro yet stylish pop sound. The trademark 80's sophisti-pop and modern experimental soft rock grooves are still present, but the sound is bolder and more expansive, and the album is their most pop-oriented to date. The album opens with "Direct Sunlight," with its shimmering synths and flute accents, and continues with "I Feel Alive," the title track and preceding first single, which was also performed during the band's 2018 tour of Japan. The song is an exhilarating pop tune with a slight melancholy, featuring David's signature slow and fluid guitar and floating keyboards, intertwined with Jane's elongated vocals and the chorus. In contrast, "Colder and Closer" is a shimmering tune with programmed synths, metallic drumming, and riverbed vocals.While the band itself is currently based in Montreal, each member lives in a different part of the country, and the sound of the band, which has been developed through touring, comes together while making the most of each member's experience and strengths. This is the first album with Marta on keyboards, who has been a member of the band since the last album, and she provides the core of the band with a high degree of freedom on keyboards, while Jackson (who left the band before the release), who was also in Drugdealer, a collaborative band released on the Mexican Summer label, provides the skillful bass ( He also played guitar on Drugdealer) is a solid addition. With soaring melodies and crisp production, I Feel Alive balances the brilliance of new events with the agony of leaving old ones behind. Introspective yet danceable, catchy yet addictive, I Feel Alive is an extension of the TOPS sound, but with much more scale and pop.
