Cellist Jean-Guihen Keras and pianist Alexandre Taro, two of the world’s most accomplished and popular musicians, have nurtured a rich and rare musical friendship for over 30 years. They met in 1993 at the venue of a theatrical production, hit it off immediately, and made their debut as a duo in 1997. Their first collaborative recording for the harmoniamundi label was a collection of Hungarian works recorded in 2000 (HMC-901735 [out of print]). This was followed by Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata (recorded in 2006, HMC-901930 [out of print]), a collection of sonatas by Debussy and Poulenc (recorded in 2008, HMC-902012 [out of print]), Brahms (recorded in 2018, Erato), “COMPLICES” (recorded in 2018, HMM-902274), and Maran Mare (recorded in 2022, HMM-902315). With each new release, they continue to surprise and delight us. In addition to their work as an ensemble, each of them has pursued solo careers that freely traverse not only classical music but also various other genres, presenting music that is increasingly rich in evolution and depth. These two miraculous artists, who share a refined tone and musical sensibility, seem to communicate through a dense telepathy that requires no words. They present works from every era in a style that combines innovation with universality. This collection brings together iconic performances that symbolize the duo. Furthermore, new recordings have been added especially for this release, including Britten’s Sonata, Fauré’s “Élégie,” and Weill’s “Eucalyptus”! “Eucalyptus,” which opens this commemorative album, is a stylish tango-inspired piece that showcases the duo’s charm in full force.
