Wagner's (1813-1883) epic poem "The Ring of the Nibelung" is based on Norse mythology, a tale of lust, love, hate, and transcendence of human knowledge, told with profound music. It took 26 years to complete the entire work, which required 15 hours of performance time. "The Rhine's Gold," the preface written in 1876, is an introduction to the story and a compact (though more than two hours long) narrative. It is a popular work that has been performed in opera houses around the world, but it is a difficult work that will not become a masterpiece unless many problems are solved, from the choice of singers, direction, orchestral technique, and the ability of the conductor. The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra's first performance of "Ring" was in concert format, and under the direction of the prodigious Zweden, the performance was beyond reproach. The famous baritone Gernet's performance as Wotan also attracted much attention.Incidentally, the jacket design is taken directly from the poster of this concert. Naxos Japan
