The album includes works from Bach, the gold standard of unaccompanied violin, to Bartók and Boulez. This promising violinist shows solid technique, musicality, and inner passion. The Sonata No. 3 is the grandest of Bach's sonatas, accounting for three of his six works for unaccompanied violin. In particular, the theme of the second movement fugue, which is 354 bars long, is based on the old Pentecost chorale "Come, Holy Spirit, O Lord God. Michael Barenboim approaches Bach's music with great technical mastery, beautiful melodies, and a high degree of concentration. The "Sonata for Solo Violin," Bartók's last work, incorporates Bach-influenced counterpoint and the essence of his collected folk music from Hungary and the surrounding area. The performance is convincing, with a sense of tension and serenity throughout.Boulez's Anthem is a fine work that shows a new frontier in the exploration of the possibilities of violin performance techniques in the 1990s.
