Description:

A two-piano version of *The Ring of the Nibelung* by Mahler’s close friend, Hermann Bohn! A gem of a Wagner transcription by Hermann Bohn, the musician who broke new ground with his arrangements for two pianos! Hermann Behn (1859–1927), a close friend of Mahler’s, was a German musician who studied composition under Bruckner and Rheinberger. By around 1883, he had largely ceased writing original compositions and went on to break new ground by arranging works by other composers—particularly symphonic works—for two pianos. Behn’s *50 Symphonic Movements from the Music Dramas of Richard Wagner*, begun in 1914, was one of the largest transcription projects in history. In addition to this work, the Musicaphon label has released a two-piano version of Wagner’s opera *Tristan und Isolde* (excerpts, M56986), as well as a two-piano version of Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” which was praised by Mahler himself (M56915). In the Wagner works, the arrangements are intentionally designed to create a sense of dissonance between the two performers—for example, by expanding chords and skillfully utilizing wide left-hand fingerings that are difficult to play—a characteristic that distinguishes this approach from the traditional methods used in arranging Mahler’s symphonies. Although these arrangements are highly challenging and go beyond the scope of typical home piano music, performers who understand Behn’s intentions and use the pedals appropriately and extensively can produce a rich sound befitting Wagner’s symphonic music. The recording was made in Bayreuth using two pianos from the local piano manufacturer Steingrabner, a company with deep ties to the Wagner family. Tokyo M Plus
