Thomas Fai and the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra present their 22nd Haydn cycle from the London set, No. 103 "Drumroll" and No. 98! The tempo of the introduction to No. 103 "Drumroll" could be described as fast-paced, but this performance makes an impact with its graininess and intensity. It is a drumming sequence that would surprise even the most seasoned drummers. The beauty of the strings and the percussion-like playing of the wind instruments give the entire piece its fullness. The ensemble is showing increasing maturity, and future releases by Pfeiffer and the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra are sure to be noteworthy! Symphony No. 98 in B flat major is the second symphony composed in London in 1792 and premiered that season.This is the first B-flat major symphony to use the B-flat trumpet with timpani. It is a gorgeous work, especially in the finale with its charming and brilliant passages. On the other hand, Symphony No. 103 in E-flat major "Drumroll" was composed in January-February 1795, the last year of Haydn's stay in London, and was premiered on March 2 of the same year at the 4th Opera Concert. The orchestra at the premiere consisted of 60 musicians, which was quite large for the time, and the performance was directed by Viotti and Haydn, who served as concertmasters. King International
