Description:
A collection of works related to Wagner by Willem Lachmier, a student of Heydtschek! Two Wagner piano works and five arrangements based on Wagner's operas. Wagner's Fantasy in F-sharp minor, written by a young Wagner, has almost no instructions for phrasing or dunamics, leaving it up to the performer's interpretation, but Lachoumia delivers a convincing performance that makes this a very significant recording. Wagner's "Elegy" is derived from a draft for "Tristan und Isolde." It is a fitting piece to conclude this disc. This is a dense time of tremendous virtuosity and excellent programming. Gérard Pesson's "On the Mast," commissioned by the City of Paris, is based on the melody sung by the young sailor at the beginning of Tristan. He says he wrote this piece because of its simplicity and fanciful folk song-like character. Noteworthy is Hugo Wolff's arrangement of "Valkyrie."It is a superbly crafted masterpiece that takes about 20 minutes to complete. The "Devil's Flame" is even more powerful than the harp and orchestra performance. It is also intriguing to hear each voice part sound differently than when heard in the orchestra. Lachoumia was born in Lyon in 1974. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon with Eric Heidsieck and Jerry Moutier. He received the first prize with unanimous approval and praise from the jury. Further studies with Moutier in the master's program. In 2006, he won the first prize at the International 20th Century Piano Music Competition in Orleans. He captivates audiences with both premieres of contemporary pieces and major repertoire, as well as with innovative programs, as seen on this disc. King International
