Released in 1980 on the Saravah label, it was a rare album for them to use outside producers and musicians, but they were not happy with the results. This album was recently discovered and recorded by just the two of them before recording. It is a collection of demos, so to speak, but for those who love the works of the early 70s, this is the original form of the album, which is strange. After the release of "Like Radio," an explosive album infused with the free jazz energy of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Brigitte Fontaine and Aleski Belkacem released six albums together or separately between 1972 and 1977. Often performed with only vocals, guitar, and percussion, or a cappella, their music was in stark contrast to the orchestral-heavy French pop of the time. This minimalist, improvisational approach highlighted the poetic power of the lyrics and the intimacy of the melodies, and earned them acclaim in the counterculture and underground scenes. By the end of the 1970s, Fontaine sought to make his work stand out without losing his originality. The album "Baraka," which symbolizes this transitional period, was initially recorded in his home studio without inviting outside musicians. The title, which means "blessing" in Arabic, implied a strong desire for success. The album was a mix of introspection, absurdist humor, and bold stylistic choices, featuring stereo duets and layered vocals, was technically ambitious, lyrically rich, and tackled everything from metaphysical themes to playful nonsense. However, the project ultimately went off the rails. After moving the recording to the massive Studio Davu and employing producer/guitarist Marshall "Mimi" Lorenzini, the album lost its initial intimacy. The overproduced arrangements clashed with Fontaine and Belcasement's original intention of simplicity, and as a result, the album was renamed "Les eglantines sont peut-etre formidables," which the artists later repudiated and commercial The artists later repudiated the album and refused to release it commercially. Recently rediscovered demo tapes have been stripped of their exaggerated layers, revealing the raw, emotional core of the songs and showcasing the duo's singing with rare realism. These recordings bridge the missing link in their discography between the experimental lo-fi era and their later, more accessible work. Decades later, Fontaine and Belcasement remain rebellious originals, never formulaic, always evolving, and continuing to shake the very foundations of French chanson.
