Musica Fiata

Description:

A collection of works including the masterpiece "A Christmas Tale," which is full of Heinrich Schütz's charm. The Christmas Story" by Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) is one of the most famous works before Bach's "Christmas Oratorio," first performed in 1660 and revised in 1664. It consists of an overture, nine recitative, eight intermedio, and a concluding chorus. This latest Musica Fiata recording contains the final version, discovered at the Berlin Singing Academy, and includes important revisions and new compositions that Schütz made shortly before his death to enhance the emotional depth and musical sophistication of the work. The recording also shows Schütz's skillful use of his instruments to express a variety of characters and emotions. For example, the tense recorder to represent the shepherds and the austere trombones for the high priests. The newly added and reconstructed sections have been carefully integrated to achieve a performance close to Schütz's original musical ideals. In addition to "A Christmas Story," this recording also includes Schütz's other important works, the magnificent "Magnificat" and motets from his 1648 collection of religious choral works. These works, with their detailed recordings and emotional expression, demonstrate Schütz's ability to express musically the complexities of human emotion, as well as the horrors of the Thirty Years' War. Conductor Roland Wilson is a veteran of many German and Venetian early baroque religious works, having recorded them since the 1980s. With the Musica Fiata, an instrumental group of exceptional technique, featuring cornet (zinc) and sackbutts, and La Capella Ducale, a choir in which each member is all soloist level, the ensemble's performance maintains the beauty and tension between instrumental, solo and choral music, and Schütz's music's timeless importance and provides an opportunity to contemplate the profound spiritual and human themes addressed in his works.
