Singer-songwriter Lisa O'Neill, hailing from Cavan, Ireland, releases her new EP via Rough Trade. The lead single from this EP, "The Wind Doesn't Blow This Far Right," is a powerful and poignant track that sharply captures our unstable modern times. O'Neill states about this song, "I started writing this song in November 2017 and finished it in January 2025. It was born as a response to the unstable times we're living in now." The second track features an ethereal cover of Bob Dylan's "All The Tired Horses."Additionally, the album includes "Homeless In The Thousands (Dublin in the Digital Age)" featuring Peter Doherty, known as the frontman of The Libertines and Babyshambles. O'Neill has consistently released songs tackling social issues in the midst of change. Notable examples include "Rock the Machine," which addresses unemployment in Dublin's port district; "When Cash Was King," depicting the shift to cashless payments; and "Violet Gibson," inspired by the Irish woman who attempted to assassinate Mussolini in 1926. "Homeless In The Thousands (Dublin in the Digital Age)" similarly portrays the worsening homelessness crisis in Dublin and Ireland.The new song "Mother Jones," gaining popularity at recent live shows, is dedicated to Irish activist Mary G. Harris Jones (Mother Jones), who emigrated to America and became a symbol of the labor union movement. It depicts her organizing coal miners in 1902—the event that earned her the title "America's Most Dangerous Woman"—and her contributions to establishing the nation's first child labor laws. This new song deepens O'Neill's gaze toward activism. The EP concludes with a beautiful cover of the seasonal hymn "The Bleak Midwinter," followed by a moving recitation of James Stevens' poem "Autumn 1915."
