Claude Debussy was a modern French composer born in August 1862 and died in March 1918; 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of his death. Taking as his subject matter the fluid scenes of nature, the images of moments of interplay between light and shadow, pentatonic scales, church melodies, whole-tone scales, irrational rhythms such as triplets and quintuplets, sounds far removed from tonality and functional harmony, and pianissimo-based dinamics, rich and colorful orchestrations, The music is expressed through freely changing tempi with extensive use of tempo rubato. During this period, Japonisme had a great influence on Impressionist musicians, and Debussy was one of the first Western musicians to adopt Japonisme. The main characteristic of his melodies is that he did not insist on beautiful melodies or a proper structure of music, but rather pursued the acoustic effects created by the instantaneous changes in sound color.This 4-CD set, Debussy: Centenarian Edition, includes some of Debussy's most famous works. The orchestral works, conducted by Mikko Frank, are played with characteristic intensity and color, but never explode, maintaining a high level of tension. Catherine Chorale's varied sound balance, free tempo swings, and piano with rhythmic sharpness contrasted with rubato. Nathalie Stutzman's confident and beautifully sung voice is like a recitation of a song. Michael Tilson Thomas conducts with meticulous attention to detail and polish. Vant's conducting created an exquisite lyricism and a polished sound that was appropriate for the sensual story. Each of these recordings is unique and a collection of great recordings.
