Description:

A universe of fascinating contrasts. The Czech composer Bohuslav Martineau (1890-1959) is the subject of a series of new recordings by the Supraphon label, which has been releasing new recordings of his works for violin and piano. This album features three works for violin and piano, with the leading Czech violinist Josef Špáček and pianist Miroslav Sekera as soloists. Martinů was also a violinist, and his symphonic works in particular are characterized by their piano-like color. The Concerto for Violin, Piano, and Orchestra was commissioned by Benno & Sylvia Rabinov, a married duo, and composed in 1953. It was premiered the following May 1954. The Double Concerto is rarely performed today, although the most famous work from the same period is Symphony No. 6, "Symphonic Fantasy," which was composed for the 75th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The Violin Sonata No. 3 is also a product of the American period. The work was written by Martineau, driven by nostalgia for the impending end of World War II, and premiered in New York the following year in 1945. Five Pieces for Violin and Piano was written in 1930 during his Paris period. The five pieces for violin and piano were written in 1930 during the Parisian period, and are notable for their rough harmonies and sharpness, while incorporating counterpoint. Spachek and Sekera complete an album that proves Martineau's versatility. King International
