Barry Douglas's fifth Schubert album is Piano Sonatas Nos. 14 & 17. Barry Douglas is the Irish virtuoso who became the first non-Russian to win the gold medal in the piano category at the 8th International Tchaikovsky Competition since Cliburn in 1986. Douglas, who has completed a six-volume cycle of Brahms's complete works for solo piano and has received worldwide acclaim for his mature expression, next steps forward with a collection of Schubert's piano works. In Schubert Volume 5, which has been steadily building up, Douglas performs two contrasting sonatas composed in the 1820s. The brooding A minor sonata (No. 14), written during a period when he suffered from syphilis and depression, and the D major sonata (No. 17), a diplomatic work (and a large work that takes nearly 40 minutes to perform) written during a vacation to the spa resort of Gastein in the Austrian Alps and nicknamed the "Gasteiner". In the margins, Liszt's transcriptions of "Love Letter" and "Serenade" from the song cycle "Swan Song" complete the lovely program.The piano used is a Steinway Model D (541 687) concert grand piano from the CIT Cork School of Music (Ireland), where Barry Douglas is artist-in-residence, as in the previous four volumes.
