Up-and-coming Brooklyn-based jazz guitarist/composer Mary Halvorson releases two new compositions on Nonesuch Records: BELLADONNA, a five-song suite for guitar and string quartet featuring the Mivos String Quartet, and BELLADONNA, a new composition for string quartet featuring the Mivos String Quartet. Mary Halvorson, an up-and-coming jazz guitarist and composer based in Brooklyn, has signed with Nonesuch Records. The first release on the label will be "AMARY". The release will be a two-part work consisting of two albums, "AMARYLLIS" and "BELLADONNA". Both albums will be a suite that Mary performed last fall at Roulette, a performing arts center in Brooklyn, and both albums were produced and mixed by John Dieterich of Derhoof.AMARYLLIS is a suite of six compositions performed by Mary and Patricia Brennan (vibraphone), Nick Dunston (bass), Tomas Fujiwara (drums), Jacob Garchik (trombone), and Adam O'Farrill ( The six-piece ensemble, consisting of Dunston (bass), Fujiwara (drums), Jacob Garchik (trombone), and Adam O'Farrill (trumpet), reflects Mary's diverse musical influences, ranging from jazz to experimental and new music. The Mivos String Quartet also plays on three of the tracks. BELLADONNA is a suite of five compositions for guitar and string quartet, performed by Mary on guitar and The Mivos string quartet, and is Mary's first work for string quartet. AMARYLLIS features some of my favorite musicians on the planet.I started composing in 2020, when the world was in a slump and I had to suspend most of my activities, with only a guitar, pencil, notepaper, and computer at hand. The joy of imagining what the music would sound like was what kept me sane and gave me a reason to keep going. At the same time, I was listening to a lot of string quartet music. I had some orchestration books lying around my apartment, and I also had time to take composition lessons. I always had a dream of making music for string quartets, but I always thought it was difficult and out of reach. But when my available schedule and endless hours opened up before me, I decided that now was the time to give it a try."(1/2)
