The three critically acclaimed Brahms albums are now available on this new recording by Garrick Ohlsson, the American pianist who won first prize at the 1966 Busoni International Piano Competition, the 1968 Montreal International Competition, and the 8th International Chopin Piano Competition. Since moving to Hyperion, Allison has produced a diverse and brilliant array of albums including Brahms, Granados, Griffiths, Scriabin, Smetana, Debussy, Prokofiev, Bartók, and many more. After a number of brilliant and varied albums, Ohlsson finally recorded a collection of Schubert's piano sonatas. Ohlsson couples the young Schubert's early work, the Piano Sonata in A minor, D537 (No. 4), with the Piano Sonata in A major, D979 (No. 20), one of his sonata trilogy completed only two months before his death.The two closely related works, with the theme of No. 4 also being quoted in No. 20, are rich in poetic insight and eloquence, and have all the elements one would expect from a true Schubertian.
