Description:

The first posthumously recorded tribute album of works by the great Estonian composerThe inherent power of old folk songs is the driving force behind the compositions of Velijo Tormis (1930-2017). In the famous words of this great Estonian composer. 'It is not the folk song that uses me. It is the folk songs that use me." This sentiment is reflected in the reliable and clear performance by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra conducted by Tonu Kariyuste. Kariyuste was one of Tormis' musical colleagues for decades, and four orchestral ticles ("Autumn Landscapes," "Winter Patterns," "Spring Sketches," and "Summer Motifs") celebrate the changing seasons. And three pieces ("Worry Breaks the Spirit," "Hamlet's Song I," and "Herding Calls") are performed in new arrangements by Tonu Calyuste, who continues and celebrates Tormis' work. The album opens with "The Tower Bell in My Village," commissioned by Calyuste 45 years ago.Composed to a poem by Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, it seems to fit perfectly with the main purpose of this tribute album. It is a poem that goes, "Oh, death, it is a bend in the road/If you pass by, you are out of sight/But still your footprints go on...". The album was recorded in October and November 2020 at the Methodist Church in Tallinn. "The album is a memorable recollection that evokes scenes from Velillo Tormis' childhood." As well as "Melancholy Songs" and "Herding Calls," the album includes a series of choral pieces and "Reminiscentiae" for string orchestra." The Tower Bell in My Village" was commissioned in 1978. I visited Fernando Pessoa with the text and asked him to compose a piece for a concert tour with my choir. This album recalls our collaboration over the years. It is the first album recorded after Velillo Tormis passed away." (Tonu Kariyuste) Universal Music/IMS
