Estonian Vocal Ensemble's New Album "Vox Clamantis: Works of Henrik Udegård "The Estonian vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis, together with its founder and conductor Jahn-Eik Turve, will present a new challenge in the form of a clever program of worship choral music by Norwegian composer Henrik Udegård (b. 1955). The Estonian vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis and the ensemble's founder and conductor, Jahn-Eik Turve, will present a new and skillful program of worship choral music by Norwegian composer Henrik Udegård (b. 1955). Udegård's works interweave Gregorian chant and Norwegian folk songs with subtlety and skill. As an organist and choral conductor, Udegård's music has always been closely associated with the church, and worship was often the catalyst for his compositions. Udegård's musical ideas were heavily influenced by two important traditions, Gregorian chant and Norwegian folk song, and unique expressions of both can be found in his works.The eight-part Meditations over St. Mary Magdalene's feast in Nidaros, composed in 2017, is based on antiphonas found in 13th century manuscripts from medieval Scandinavia. Udegård's composition makes these antiphonas divine, which are then carefully revealed by Vox Clamantis. Vox Clamantis has previously recorded for ECM works by Arvo Pärt, Erik Sven Thur, and most recently by Estonian composer Kirillus Krek. His recording of Krek was described by the BBC as "magic from another planet. This new album was recorded in March 2021 at St. Nicholas Dome Church in Haapsalu, Estonia.
