50th anniversary of his death. The 50th anniversary of the death of the famous Czech conductor, Karel Ančer (1908-1973), all the albums recorded by Philips and Deutsche Grammophon are collected for the first time and released in a 9-CD boxed set. This 9-CD box set includes all of his recordings for Philips and Deutsche Grammophon. Ancell was the principal conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra during the Cold War, from 1950 to 1968, and made most of his recordings for the Czech Supraphon label. However, when the Czech Philharmonic began touring abroad, Ancell's own reputation grew along with theirs, and he began receiving invitations from major European and American orchestras. Deutsche Grammophon made a recording with them in 1955 while they were on tour in Germany, and listeners around the world became acquainted with the "Ancell style" of Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony: tense, clearly defined, and always singing expressively to the melody. I have come to know the "Anchelle style," which is tense, clearly defined, and always expressive of the melody.All Philips recordings were made with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and include music by Dvořák and Tchaikovsky. Dvořák's Slavonic Dances are coupled with Brahms' Hungarian Dances, conducted by Tibor Paul, as in the original, making this the first official CD release. In original jacket. Universal Music/IMS
