A Masterpiece by Karaběč, One of the Leading Czech Composers of the 20th Century! Miloslav Karaběč (1908–1979) was one of the leading Czech composers of the 20th century. He studied at the Czech Technical University in Prague and later studied composition and conducting at the Prague Conservatory. After being appointed conductor and director of music production at Czech Radio in 1932, he remained involved with the organization for many years. Throughout his life and work, Kaberáč prominently emphasized the theme of “not yielding to evil and pursuing human ideals.” He was a musician who expressed both of these themes in Czechoslovakia under Nazi occupation and under communist dictatorship. This album features works essential to understanding Kalabec. “The Mystery of Time” is a masterpiece that expresses his emotional fear of and fascination with the universe. As political repression in Czechoslovakia eased in the 1960s, Karaběč gained international acclaim and produced two masterpieces: “Hamlet Improvisations,” commemorating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth, and “Reflections.” Following the Soviet invasion in August 1968, the Communist regime tightened its grip once again, attempting to suppress the music of this open-minded composer, both at home and abroad. Kavaleřič completed “Metamorphosis II” just weeks before his death. This final work was inspired by the oldest Czech hymn, “Lord, Have Mercy on Us,” and symbolically concludes the piece by repeating the prayer “Lord, have mercy” three times. The performance is by the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by Marko Ivanović, who has garnered acclaim for his superb interpretations in the Complete Symphonies (SU-4202). King International
