Description:
Popper (1843–1913), a cellist from the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy (a state that existed in Europe from 1848 to 1918). He began studying the cello at a young age and embarked on his first concert tour at the age of 20. Praised by Hans von Bülow in Germany, he was appointed principal cellist of the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra in 1867. However, he left the orchestra six years later and went on to perform throughout Europe as a soloist. From 1896 onward, he made significant contributions in the field of education, including teaching the next generation at the Budapest Academy of Music. This two-disc set is the first installment in the “Popper: Complete Cello Works Series,” featuring two renowned German cellists, Hülshof and Rummel. It includes two versions of his “Suite,” one of his signature works, making it an album worth checking out even for those who aren’t necessarily cello enthusiasts. Although Popper left behind a vast body of work, it is unfortunate that only a fraction of his compositions are performed today; however, perhaps this release will serve as an opportunity to spread awareness of this composer’s brilliance?
