Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber (1644-1704) was the great master violinist and composer of the 17th century. Biber's masterpiece, the "Rosary Sonatas," is a large work consisting of 15 sonatas expressing prayers to the Virgin Mary and an unaccompanied passacaglia (guardian angel), all but the first sonata and the final passacaglia are also known as difficult pieces using scordatura (irregular tuning). Wolfgang Kachner, the leader of the Lauten Company, found similarities in the seriousness and sensuality of Biber's and Piazzolla's music. Wolfgang Kachner and the Lauten Company began in 1984 as a lute duo with Kachner and Hans-Werner Appel, and over the next 30 years they have focused on bringing the music of the time back to life in a modern way, unlike the so-called period instrument performances. The group is characterized by its ability to incorporate a variety of soloists and perform in a wide range of configurations. For example, the orchestra performs operatic arias with orchestra alone, or contemporary and popular music by Philip Glass and others, on old instruments.This album traces the accumulation of their performance activities through recordings of baroque music, and features the sensual music of Julia Schröder, leader of the Basel Chamber Orchestra.
