The third Bach edition for RCA Red Seal by Andrea Bacchetti, one of Italy's most distinctive pianists, is a 2-CD set of six Bach piano concertos with the RAI Symphony Orchestra. Bacchetti's individual style, which won him great admiration from Berio before his death, is on full display here, as he reinterprets the works from various angles and brings their characteristics into new relief. Bacchetti's Bach playing, which has been described as "one of the ideal Bach images of the 21st century," is not a romantic piano interpretation, but rather a study of historical harpsichord technique and its application, while at the same time capturing the charm and characteristics of the works from a variety of angles and with a free conception. The resulting music is delicate and expressive, with a lively forward motion, clear phrasing and percussion, and the eloquence of the left hand clearly unravels Bach's polyphonic writing style.Without a conductor, and with the small string orchestra of the well-known RAI National Symphony Orchestra, it is a joy in the style of Italian period performance that is truly contemporary.
