Description:
This 7 LP box set compiles over 50 years of the history of MAGMA's masterpiece, 'MDK'! Including live recordings for the first time officially released! The pride of French progressive rock band MAGMA, highly acclaimed by both light and hardcore fans, and still performed live in various configurations and countries as of 2023, their iconic masterpiece "MEKANIK DESTRUKTIW" is now available in a 7-LP box set. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of the studio version of "MEKANIK DESTRUKTIW KOMMANDOH (MDK)", a 7LP box set is now available, which briefly summarizes the history of "MDK" over the past 50 years and the changes that have taken place. The details of each LP are as follows: LP 1 "1972 - PARIS ORTF": Live recordings from the May 26, '72 Paris show, recorded for the national radio station ORTF broadcast. First official appearance. It was aired on the program "Tapage Nocturne" on the French public radio channel France Musique in '10, and has become a relatively well-known sound source among fans.MDK' was still in its developmental stage, and like the single "MEKANIK KOMMANDOH" and the live recording of the November '71 concert "CONCERT 1971 - BRUXELLES - THEATRE 140", it featured a bossa nova style introduction that was omitted from the final version, a free jazz style improvisation in the middle part of the song, and Christian's intense agitation. The performance is quite different from the current version, as it includes a bossa nova-like intro, a free jazz-like improvised part in the middle part, and Christian's strong agitation (recorded in "INEDITS" under the title of 'Terrien Si Je T'ai Convoque'), which was omitted in the final version. The performance is quite different from the current one. However, while the performance time in '71 was about 17 minutes, this take was expanded to over 30 minutes with the addition of further parts, and the band was making steady progress toward completion. Three months later, in August 1972, a live performance of a form similar to the present composition was already confirmed. The wind instrumental group that inserts tricky and fast phrases based on the main melody motif, and Rene's back voice chorus that may even eat up Klaus' vocals, are all unique to this period, and are a must-hear performance.LP 2 "1973 - Choeurs de la Storchhaus" Released in '89 under the title "MEKANIK KOMMANDOH" (later reissued as part of the AKT series), this is a studio demo recorded at Studio Aquarium in January '73. First analog release. The recording is based on the live performance at the "Sigma 8" festival held in Bordeaux in November of the previous year, and was recorded with the "choeur de la Storchhaus," a chorus group that was invited as a guest at the same festival. This is a valuable source that features Jean-Pierre Lembert's performance as well as shows the reality of MAGMA from late '72 to early '73, which is scarce in the archives, both officially and unofficially. The bass playing/bass lines between Jean-Pierre Lembert on this source and Jannick Top on the studio takes of about 3 months are also interesting. Except for the beginning of the song, which is led by the piano playing dissonant chords at random, the performance is characterized by a linear groove compared to later performances, especially Christian's drumming, and could be described as the backbone of 'MDK'.
