Rattle's Last Gillvester! Soloists also perform works by Bernstein on the 100th anniversary of Joyce DiDonato's birth! The Berliner Philharmoniker's annual New Year's Eve Gillvester concert was the focus of much attention even before the performance, as 2017 will be Rattle's last Gillvester as Music Director. Rattle has taken up the theme of "dance" in recent years, featuring works by various composers, including Dvořák's "Carnival" Overture, Stravinsky's Pas de Deux from "Apollo Leading the Muse" in 2017, and works by Bernstein, whose 100th birthday will be in 2018. Bernstein's early musical "On the Town," about the love affair of three sailors who are given a 24-hour vacation in New York City. And "The White House Cantata," set in the White House and featuring the presidents of the United States, depicts the history of the White House before and after the Civil War.In a sense, it is a political work that links to the social situation of our time. The final piece is Shostakovich's ballet music "The Golden Age. Set in the restaurant "Golden Age," the story is about a love affair between a gangster and a fisherman who compete with each other for the dancer Rita. Although the ballet was not a success as a ballet work, it was later compiled as a suite of four movements. All of the pieces are performed with great dynamism and intensity, and one can feel the liveliness and exuberance of New Year's Eve. Also featured as soloist is American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, who will give us Richard Strauss' songs with orchestral accompaniment. King International
