One of the few leader albums by Frank Butler, who has played on West Coast recordings by A. Pepper, P. Newborn, Jr. Craftsmanship and tasteful drumming shines through on this album! Frank Butler, who has been active since the 1950s as a leading black drummer on the West Coast, has played with Art Pepper, Phineas Newborn, Jr. and Curtis Cowns, and has also played on albums recorded by Miles and Coltrane on the West Coast. However, he has recorded only a few albums as a leader, including this album recorded in 1977 and "Wheelin' And Dealin'" the following year (both on Xanadu), both of which are excellent albums in which Butler's tasteful drumming shines brightly, albeit in a subdued way. Pianist Doro Coker and Butler have often performed together since Art Pepper's 1960 recording of "Intensity," and the duo is widely known to fans as a great duo. Here, the trio is joined by white bassist Monty Budwig and backed up by white tenor saxophonist Jack Montrose, and the performance is full of swing. I would love to see "Wheelin' And Dealin'" with Teddy Edwards and Joe Farrell in the same trio on CD.
