Laura, Livia, and Anna were professional women musicians, a rarity at the time, who were admired by poets and greatly influenced the culture of the court. They truly broke the glass ceiling in 1580, paving the way for women to achieve fame in the world of the arts. In this production, Apollo's Fire, led by Janet Sorrell, along with the modern Amanda trio (Forsythe, Powell, and Kreider), bring that innovation and beauty back to life. Apollo's Fire is a Cleveland period orchestra founded by Janet Sorrell, a brilliant young woman who studied with Gustav Leonhardt in Amsterdam and Roger Norrington and Leonard Bernstein in the United States.
