Gardiner & LSO Mendelssohn Complete Great Symphony No. 2 "Anthem" Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in the conclusion (fifth) of the Mendelssohn series. The Second Symphony was composed in June 1840 for the 400th anniversary of Gutenberg's invention of letterpress printing, and was premiered at the Thomas Church in Bach's honor as the closing concert of a series of events. The piece is a triumph of trombone playing. The three-movement Sinfonia opens with a triumphant theme played by the trombone, followed by a cantata section with a chorus.The Lutheran chorale "Now all have hearts, mouths, and hands" performed by the eight-part unaccompanied chorus at the beginning of the seventh chorale in the cantata section is very impressive (Bach also wrote cantatas BWV 9 and 192 using this chorale), and the world expands further with the addition of orchestra. The finale is a large choral fugue, with the triumphant theme that appears at the beginning played on a high note, leading to a moving finale. The first piece, "Sinfonia," opens with the London Symphony Orchestra's wind section in high spirits, and the ensemble that follows is a delight. The soprano is Lucy Crowe, a British singer with a gorgeous voice. The mezzo-soprano is Adamonite, a Lithuanian singer with a wide range of repertoire, and the tenors are Bel Canto and Michael Spires, both American singers who specialize in roles from Rossini to Faust in Berlioz's "Faust's Punishment".Recorded with clarity and softness throughout, this is a masterful performance that highlights the ensemble virtuosity of each section of the LSO and the skill of Gardiner's hand-picked Monteverdi Choir. In addition to the conventional SACD hybrid disc, a Pure Audio Blu-ray disc containing identical performances will be included.
