A Christmas Story" was librettoed by Simon Jones, pastor of Merton College. Set between Advent and Candlemas, it is an interweaving of biblical stories, liturgical texts, and four poems specially commissioned by members of the college. The new poems are entrusted to the choir's prized girls' choir, and the main part of the work is performed by the choir and an ensemble of flutes, percussion, strings, saxophones, and three trombones. The harmony of the three trombones is reminiscent of the sacred sounds of Schütz's 17th century works, which Jackson had in mind when composing A Christmas Story. *Recording: December 11-12, 2023, Merton College Chapel, Oxford.
