Bizet's Piano Music, a New Charm Outside of OperaBizet is world-famous for his "Carmen," but his piano music is not so well known today. Nevertheless, Bizet himself was an excellent pianist, and some of his early works for piano are very fine. Johann Blanchard, who made his impressive debut with a work by female composer Cécile Chaminade, took up the challenge with a fascinating array of works, including the "Grand Waltz for Concert," Op. 1, composed at the age of 16, and the "Rhine Song," a six-part mute song. One of the reasons these works are not often performed is said to be their technical difficulty, but Blanchard plays them with great skill. Universal Music/IMS
