An evening with an intellectual program that looks at the development of impressionist music! The third concert of the Giulini & Berliner Philharmoniker Live series will give a bird's-eye view of the development of impressionist music. The music of Giulini, who confronted Impressionist works, always overwhelmed the audience with its understated yet outstanding precision and tension. The program for this evening began with Rossini and climaxed with Debussy's "The Sea," a very well-thought-out selection that allowed the audience to hear the development of impressionist music, each work of which is said to have influenced the next. I know of no conductor other than Giulini who can combine so much dramatic tension and sensitivity in a single melody. No matter how aristocratic and clever his conducting, every melodic phrase was three-dimensional, and the counterpoint melody was not merely an additional part, but was properly emphasized to live up to its name. Even when the music reaches its zenith, Giulini's hands show a basic modesty, but the notes are never indistinct or overly prominent.
