Albert Roussel, born in Rouen in 1869, was a composer who evolved from Impressionism to Neoclassicism and, alongside Ravel, led the French music scene following Debussy’s death. In his youth, he aspired to a career in the navy; he worked at sea and witnessed the landscapes of various foreign lands with his own eyes. After leaving the navy, he returned to his musical studies and devoted himself to translating his youthful experiences into music, composing numerous magnificent, richly colored works. On this recording, Stéphane Denève conducts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, offering listeners the finest interpretation by a renowned conductor who deeply loves the music of his native France. In addition to the symphonies, this well-curated album allows you to fully savor the unique charm of Roussel’s works, including the “Bacchus and Ariane” Suite, the Concert for Small Orchestra, “In the Spirit of a Spring Festival,” the “Flemish Rhapsody,” and the “Little Suite,” among others.
