Description:

A collection of chamber music by Finland's leading composer, Kalevi Aho! Kalevi Aho is considered one of Finland's most commissioned composers. In addition to large-scale orchestral works such as his seven symphonies and 31 concertos, he has also written numerous chamber works and music for solo instruments. The new album, featuring Sonja Hulaki and Jákko Kuusisto, features six of Aho's compositions in this genre. The virtuoso "Prelude, Toccata and Postlude" for cello and piano. The "Lamentations," performed by brothers Jákko and Pekka Kuusisto, was composed as music to mourn the death of the young violinist Sakari Laukola." The piece is based on a motif that takes the name "Sakari Laukola" as its sound form. The "Frost" for violin and piano is named after the beautiful Finnish word "Halla". The "Sonata for Solo Violin" is a 20-minute work based on solo sonatas by Bach and Bartók, which Aho composed in his free time while serving on an alcoholism care team in Pernio. The "In Memory of Per Henrik Nordgren" was composed at the request of Jon Stulgård as a memorial to the composer, who died on August 25, 2008. The "Homage to Beethoven" "Piano Sonata No. 2" is written in five movements, with Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" sonata as the main motif. It was composed as a graduation gift to Sonja Hulaki, who studied Kalevi Aho's piano music in the doctoral program at the Sibelius Academy. King International
