Description:
A collection of cello works written by American composer Jeffrey Gordon for Muldrup SACD hybrid disc. This is a collection of works written by American composer Jeffrey Gordon for Danish cellist Toke Muldrup (1980-). The "Cello Concerto" was inspired by Thomas Mann's "Dr. Faustus," a favorite of both Gordon and Muldrup. The "spirit" of Mann's novel and its "sweeping arc from innocence to madness" are told in nine movements, including a "prologue," seven episodes including two "cadenzas," and an "epilogue. The work was commissioned by the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, of which Muldrup is principal. The subtitle of the piece, "Five Impressions from Shakespeare's The Tempest," is in the style of a cello sonata.Prelude and Storm〉〈Ferdinad and Miranda〉〈Ariel and all his quality〉〈Caliban (and Sycorax))〉〈The Isle is Full of Noises〉〈Prospero Drowns His Book Muldrup and American Stephen Beck premiered the piece at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall on December 17, 2015.
