The Age of Napoleon played on harp. Catherine Michel plays unknown masterpieces! Philippe Pierlot, principal flutist of the Orchestre National de France, also performs with her in this collection of works for harp by composers who were active in France during the Napoleonic era. French harpist Catherine Michel graduated from the Paris Conservatory and began her career as a soloist with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in 1970. In 1978, she became principal harpist of the Orchestre National de l'Opera de France, where she has performed with Bernstein, Böhm, Boulez, Celibidacke, and many other distinguished conductors. Her collaborations with her ex-husband, composer Michel Legrand, have taken her beyond the boundaries of classical music and into a wide range of genres, including fusions with jazz. Throughout her career, Catherine Michel has been active in featuring works from the 18th and 19th centuries, not only performing but also publishing unknown works. Recording these works is part of her life's work.The selection consists of works by composers who were themselves harpists, with the exception of Dusiek (whose mother and wife are harpists) and Louis Thiroux (a flutist), although both of the above mentioned composers were also well versed in the instrument, and their works, which make use of the harp, are a rewarding listening experience in which each composer's individuality can be enjoyed.
